Raymond Clarence Gentry was born on 29th May 1876 in Essex and enlisted into the Royal Navy 29th May 1894. His service papers show 'killed in action' during operations in the Persian Gulf. Approximately 541 medals were awarded to H.M.S. Theseus for operations against local chiefs who were involved in the slave trade and practiced human sacrifice.
Commonwealth War Graves entry confirms he was killed in action 9th September 1915 H.M.S. Pyramus. Commemorated at the Tehran war cemetery. He is confirmed in his service papers as serving H.M.S. Pyramus 29th May 1914 and his papers state 'killed in action' during operations in the Persian Gulf in September 1915. In 1914 she formed part of the escort for the New Zealand Force which occupied German Samoa. In July 1915 she was present at the Rufiji river delta action when the monitors HMS Severn and HMS Mersey destroyed the German cruiser SMS Königsberg. He was one of two Naval ratings killed in action having been landed during this operation.
