He was killed in action on 12th July 1915 aged 21, Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Thompson of Carter House, Camptown, Jedburgh. On 12th July 1915 one final attempt was made by the 52nd Lowland division (of which the Kings Own Scottish Borderers were part of) to break through the Turkish lines at Helles. The plan was to attack towards Krithia along Achi Baba Nullah and the attack took place in four waves at 7.35AM. The 1st 4th Battalion took very heavy casualties of 535 men that day. Nichol Robertson of the 1st 4th Battalion wrote after the action 'And of course the Turks could concentrate everything they had on one small sector. The Turks were on the defensive and we just got everything they could possibly lay into us. We were ordered to take three lines of trenches and when we got to the first, there was another practically obliterated and there was no such thing as a third line so we ended up right out in the open and were out-flanked on either side by the Turks.'
