WWI Gallipoli KOSB Medal, Plaque Casualty Group

-1914-15 Star 7300 Pte. A. Thompson K.O.SCO:BORD: -War & Victory Medal named as above -Death Plaque named Andrew Thompson with original card envelope Copy paperwork confirming he served for the 1st 4th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers entering the Balkans theatre 4th of June 1915 He was killed in action on 12th July 1915 aged 21, Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Thompson of Carter House, Camptown, Jedburgh. On 12th July 1915 one final attempt was made by the 52nd Lowland division (of which the Kings Own Scottish Borderers were part of) to break through the Turkish lines at Helles. The plan was to attack towards Krithia along Achi Baba Nullah and the attack took place in four waves at 7.35AM. The 1st 4th Battalion took very heavy casualties of 535 men that day. Nichol Robertson of the 1st 4th Battalion wrote after the action 'And of course the Turks could concentrate everything they had on one small sector. The Turks were on the defensive and we just got everything they could possibly lay into us. We were ordered to take three lines of trenches and when we got to the first, there was another practically obliterated and there was no such thing as a third line so we ended up right out in the open and were out-flanked on either side by the Turks.' High:L.I. -Death plaque named John Murdoch With copy research including Commonwealth War Graves John Murdoch served with the 16th Battalion Highland Light Infantry and was killed in action 27th March 1916 aged 37. He was the son of John and Margaret Murdoch of Cathcart and the husband of Dora Simpson Murdoch of 14 Garry St. Cathcart, Glasgow. Commemorated at Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt. Confirmed on the roll of Honour of Citizens of Glasgow who died in the Great War. The Battalion suffered 15 killed in action on that date. Condition as shown in photographs

WWI Mercantile Marine War Medal Casualty

Hamilton Willoughby Hamilton was serving on S.S. Ava (Glasgow) Mercantile Marine. He drowned with the loss of the ship 26th January 1917. He was 28 years of age. The ship was owned by the British and Burmese S.N Company and was loaded with general cargo and coal, she left Liverpool for Dakar and Rangoone on 26th January 1917 and was never seen again. It was presumed that she had been sunk by a submarine. Her loss is given as the 26th January but she was probably sunk some time after this. He is ranked as 3rd mate and was the son of George Willoughby 23 Duke St, Southport and the late Angus Willoughby. He was born in Stockport and commemorated on the Tower Hill memorial. WWI Merchant Navy Pair- drowned aboard ship 1935

Chief Steward D. McArthur, Merchant Navy, who was killed in the sinking of the Cunard cargo ship S.S. Vardulia on 19 October 1935 British War and Mercantile Marine Medal (Daniel Mc Arthur), good very fine(2) Daniel McArthur was born at Greenock, Scotland on 9 April 1891 and joined the Merchant Navy, working first as a Ship's Cook. After serving through the Great War he was appointed Assistant Steward and worked on S.S. Colombia, performing four runs with her. Later joining CordilleraMcArthur saw another four with her before joining Vardulia as Chief Steward. This Cunard steamer was on a voyage between Hartlepool and Botwood, carrying coal in winter 1917. She foundered in rough weather an went down in the Mid-Atlantic. No evidence of her crew was ever found and it is assumed that none of them survived the sinking; sold together with copied service documents and an wreck report on Vardulia. Condition as shown in photographs
