Named RM. James Schofield was born in Rochdale 25th March 1874 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Labour Corps 24th April 1917. Served Chatham, Calais, Dunkirk and Royal Marine Deal. Early in 1917 the Royal Marine Labour Corps was formed to assist in the loading and unloading of vessels at the ports of France and Belgium. Only men over 41 years old were allowed to enlist, and many were ex-marines of various ages between 50-60. The unit turned an excellent reputation particularly at Dunkirk and Calais which were frequently bombed. Accompanied by copy short-service papers confirming locations of service.
