Callaghan Lt Commander Cyril. He was appointed SUB-Lt in H.M.S Naiad in 1903 and was specially promoted for services with the disembarkation of the Somaliland expedition as Lt Commander. He commanded the Destroyer H.M.S Attack in Admiral Beatty’s off the Dogger Bank 1915. Sir David Beatty wrote in his dispatch (London Gazette 3rd March 1915) “The good seamanship of Lt Commander Cyril Callaghan H.M.S Attack in placing his vessel alongside H.M.S Lion and subsequently H.M.S Princess Royal enabled the transfer of flag to be made in the shortest possible time.” He also commanded H.M.S Attack at the chase and distraction of the German submarine U12 off the Firth of Forth 10th March 1915 when he received the letter on Vellum expressing the approbation of the admiralty for his services in these operations. (The Naval Whose Who 1917 refers). RHS Case number 33159 on 1st April 1904 W. A Edwards in passing from the Pinnace to H.M.S Kent in Sheerness fell into the river and was soon carried 200 yards astern by the tide. Then Lt Callaghan and McGowan jumped in and rescued him.
