Herbert Lyell Parry was born in Rhyl, North Wales 14th September 1875. He joined the Royal Navy on 25th June 1896 spending most of his service prior to the First World War in home waters apart from a short spell in China. He took various engineering courses before joining H.M.S. Repulse on 8th August 1916. H.M.S Repulse participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight and was awarded his O.B.E. for maintaining the engine room of ‘Repulse’ from that point till the end of the year. He left ‘Repulse’ on 17th December 1918 spending the remainder of his service at home and was awarded the C.B. in 1931 prior to being placed on the retired list 7th September 1931. He died at Weymouth on 12th February 1963.
