Victorian Long Service & Good Conduct Medal 11th Hussars

1771. Pte. F. Morris. 11th Hussars
Frederick was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire in 1858. He enlisted into the 11th Hussars at Aldershot 28th August 1879 giving his trade as a servant. Much of his early service time was spent in and out of hospital with Bronchitis and other ailments. He married Emily E. Batty at the Parish Church Carrigaline, County Cork whilst serving in Ireland. He continued to suffer from Bronchitis which hospitalised him from time to time. He saw service in South Africa with his regiment for just over 2 years from July 1890. He was then transferred to India 24th October 1892. He then spent further time in hospital with a reoccurrence of Bronchitis. He was awarded his Victorian Long Service Medal during this period. He transferred back to the UK 24th March 1899 clearly an unwell man. He was admitted to Netley Military Hospital 15th April 1899 and was found unfit for further military service 27th June 1899. He was discharged as an invalid having served a total of 19 years, 304 days of which 8 years, 341 days were abroad. Sadly Frederick died in Trowbridge in the Octover-Decemebr quartz of 1899 aged only 41.

Alfred was born September 1863 in Croydon and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Sheerness as a boy stating his age to be 14 years and 6 months 16th December 1876. He was awarded his Long Service Medal in 1895 and then appeared to serve with the Royal Marines as a musician.

James McDonald was born at Templemore county Tipperary (where the depot of the 46th foot was based at the time) and appears on the 1871 census an orphan of the 46th Foot. (Possibly his father was Pte. John McDonald who served with the 46th Foot in the Crimea). He attested for the 46th Foot at Aldershot on 7th September 1871 and was appointed to Drummer 21st July 1872. He served with them overseas in Bermuda, Gibraltar, Malta and with the 2nd Bn. in Egypt and the Sudan from 20th July 1882- 16th June 1886 pointed Lance Corporal on 2nd May 1887 and was awarded his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 27th February 1890. He was dischareged on 6th September 1896 with 25 years service.
Accompanied by copy record of service and other research where his Christian name is also given as both Edward and John.

Accompanied by original Buckingham Palace and Board of Trade letters.
William Philps was the Master of S.S. Sea Serpent Leach & Co Limited London. He was drowned when the vessel hit a mine and sank 1 mile west of Folkestone Pier 23rd March 1916 whilst on a voyage from Birkenhead to Dunkirk with a cargo of corrugated iron. It will appear that his body was washed ashore and he is buried at Nunhead Cemetery, Allsaints, Camberwell. He was the husband of Julia Philps of Wimbledon and the son of Walter and Harriet Philps of Surrey.
He was 49 years old.

Ernest was born between April-June 1882 in Salford, Lancashire. The 1911 census lists Ernest as a driver for a furniture firm living at 97 Rosemary St, Chorlton. By the beginning of the First World War, Ernest is serving in the Mercantile Marines and married Sarah Walker in 1916. First World War service medals confirmed on his Mercantile Marine Index Card. Ernest died between October-December 1932 aged 50.

Stanley George Edgar Oatley was born on 17th July 1888 at Eastcowes, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. He is listed on the 1911 census as 'single and working as a Mariner'.
With copy documents confirming his WWI medal entitlement.
He married Kate Louisa Wyatt in 1922 and died in 1972 in Hampshire.
