With copy Commonwealth War Graves details confirming killed in action 19th October 1914. Commemorated on the Le Touret memorial panel 5 & 6. Serving with the 1st Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers. The 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers landed at Le Havre on 14 August 2014 as part of the 9th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. The battalion remained on the Western Front for the duration of the war.
Morning Bombardment: At 9:00 am, a heavy German bombardment began on the positions held by the 9th Brigade, specifically targeting Herlies and the 1st Battalion.
Infantry Attacks: An initial German infantry attack at 10:00 am was driven back. A more determined assault followed at midday but was also successfully repulsed by 1:15 pm.
Casualties: The day’s fighting resulted in the death of Second Lieutenant C. H. Van Neck and several other ranks, with dozens more wounded or missing.
He would also be entitled to the Mons Clasp.
