George Baker was Born at Dummer, Hampshire and enlisted at Winchester. He was killed in action 6th August 1915 at Gallipoli Peninsula serving with the 2nd Bn. Hampshire Regt. He was 21 years old. He was the son of Mrs E. Baker of 44 Sherborne Road, Basingstoke and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The regimental history quotes “The battalion advanced in 4 waves at 3.50pm on 6th August and encountered machine gun fire causing heavy casualties. Few men reached the Turkish lines.The casualties during this attack were 18 officers and 224 other ranks killed.”
