Hamilton Willoughby

Hamilton was serving on S.S. Ava (Glasgow) Mercantile Marine. He drowned with the loss of the ship 26th January 1917. He was 28 years of age. The ship was owned by the British and Burmese S.N Company and was loaded with general cargo and coal, she left Liverpool for Dakar and Rangoone on 26th January 1917 and was never seen again. It was presumed that she had been sunk by a submarine. Her loss is given as the 26th January but she was probably sunk some time after this. He is ranked as 3rd mate and was the son of George Willoughby 23 Duke St, Southport and the late Angus Willoughby. He was born in Stockport and commemorated on the Tower Hill memorial.
