Tho’s Mayne Pte. RM. H.M.S. Griffon
Thomas was born in Exeter, Devon and worked as a ‘Gentleman’s Servant’ before enlisting in the Royal Marines aged 18 at Exeter, 20th may 1863 stating he had previous service with the Devon Militia. He served for 21 years and 18 days, finally being discharged on 6th June 1884. He served on various ships and postings including Canopos, Racoon, the Battalion in Ireland, Valorous, Cambridge, Swiftshore, Hibernia and then the gun vessel H.M.S. Griffon in which he gained his Long Service Medal in May 1881.
With various research and copy documents. It’s unusual to see a Royal Marines Victorian Long Service Medal named to a ship.
