Approximately 170 medals were awarded to H.M.S. Philomel, this clasp was awarded to members of the expedition that proceeded up the Benin River to curb the predatory activities of chief Nana of Brohemie. The naval personnel were commanded by Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford.
