Assistant steward S.S. Runo (Hull) Killed by mine 5th September 1914 aged 28. The son of Charles and Charlotte Hirst of 12 Clarence Avenue, Bridlington, Yorks. Commemorated on the Tower Hill memorial. S.S. Runo was destroyed by a mine laid by the Germans in the North Sea. The Wilson passenger liner Runo with 238 passengers on board sunk after hitting a mine 40 miles off Shields at 4.35o’clock, she was sailing from Hull to Archangel. Most of the passengers were Russian immigrants. Survivors were picked up by trawlers after the ship was shattered by the force of the explosion and quickly sunk.
