Alfred Farmer was born in Lambeth, London and enlisted for a short service engagement with the 1st Dragoon Guards in London 8th February 1900 aged 18yrs, 9months.

He gave his occupation as ‘Hammerman’. He saw active service in South Africa from 8th January 1901- 14th November 1903. He transferred to the Army reserve 8th March 1908 and was fully discharged 7th February 1912.
